My absolute favorite read so far!

I'm ordered this book in the first place because I had no knowledge of Central American history & I thought that was quite embarrassing since my roots are from that region. I just finished the book & it was absolutely mind blowing. Rigoberta initiates her book talking about Te Mayan culture & their practices which is important to know in order to comprehend why Indians live and act the way they do. She talks about the terrible obstacles her community faces under the government of the ladinos- who she later comes to accept because not all ladinos are bad people. What was really hard to read was the death of her younger brother and her mother which is described with great detail. By the end of the book she talks about her exile and the importance of continuing the struggle to push her community forward even in the midst of people who see Indians as a burden, which they aren't! Also in the book, Rigoberta talks about her experience as a 12 year old maid in the city trying to help her family stay aliveness because landowners and government officials continue to barge into the mountains to install fear in the Indian communities.

A magnificent autobiography of an Indian woman in Guatemala interpreted by the author. This book gives insight into the culture through the eyes of someone on the inside. The injustices that the tribes received from the Guatemalan government are unbelievably unjust, inhumane, and barbaric. After reading this you may have a deep respect for the traditions of their culture and there life of living off the land for centuries, before the Spanish came and started kicking indigenous groups off of their lands.
This book is a story about resilience, that no matter what horrors and loss a person or culture may go through, you can fight on.
