A long, long book well written, but somewhat unsatisfying.

The most obvious feature of the book from the start is how long it is. And it is long for a reason. The dialogue of the many characters and the descriptions of the characters, the surroundings, environment, and emotions are seemingly never ceasing. I would take issue with the descriptions of America with regard to geography. The fictional location of Eden in the United States was impossible for me to imagine from the description of the trip and what awaited Mark and Martin. The characterizations of the political attitudes of America seemed sufficient.
Still the plot seemed complicated enough for me to wonder where it led and to keep reading. I did get to the end and wondered why Dickens did not spend more time writing and developing the finish. As it is, I wished that I had given up about 50 pages earlier.

Review of the Nonesuch Dickens edition

My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by The Overlook Press. The book is in quality hardback. The "Martin Chuzzlewit" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color of the cloth is an attractive rich red].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color. The book comes with a satin ribbon marker.
The text is set in Martin's Type and the illustrations are from the original plates. This is a handsome edition [in fact the Nonesuch editions of Dickens' works are amongst the most beautiful, affordable editions of Dickens' works] and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.
