Misspellings abound, but good for the price

I am an amateur Civil War history buff who's researching the history of a relative's artillery battery. A while back I was given a copy of "The Civil War CD-ROM" from Guild Press but found that the proprietary user interface was rather difficult to navigate. Being very familiar with Adobe Acrobat and .pdf files, I was happy to find this compilation of the Official Records (OR) in .pdf format all on one disc for a great price. I find the format VERY easy to use; searches are a relative breeze and its easy to pull excerpts to insert into MS Word documents.
HOWEVER...as the product description says, the OCR text-reading process used by Adobe to scan the ORs and convert into text is not perfect and creates spelling-type errors. The CD-ROM producers say that OCR is 99.9% accurate but "there are some small typos." I found many more that a few "small typos". In some cases, especially in tables, the OCR conversion leaves a mishmash of labels and numerical data that is virtually impossible to reconstruct correctly. In the vast majority of the cases, however, the misspellings are easy to identify and be read correctly.
The regularity of misspellings, however, can lead to incomplete search results. To get around these search problems, I found that multiple searches using a judicious choice of search terms could help me find what I wanted despite spelling errors. In the case of tables, I've had to give up on this .pdf version and locate the correct information via on-line access to the ORs. That said, with the ease of use of this product's search and reading functions, I find it much faster to use this CD-ROM to find and read the normal text, and pull the tables I need from other OR sources, than to use the Guild Press's "Civil War CD-ROM" .
Overall, this product was well worth the price (about 75% cheaper than the other Civil War CD-ROMs) and has been a great source of information for my research.

Product arrived in timely fashion, and performs as advertised. I would revise the search engine to gather results in a more overview fashion. Price was excellent.

The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion is an amazingly informative source about the activities of the Union army. It contains Southern records, but the union side is much more complete. However, don't buy this CD. This information is available at no charge from a certain online ebook seller that rhymes with "Toogle".
